Waterloo Fireworks Festival location changing

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The Waterloo Jaycees are announcing a new home for the annual Waterloo Fireworks Festival. The festival, which is typically held across the bridge of Fourth Street, will move to the Riverloop Expo Plaza for the event on Saturday, July 2.

The committee voted this year to move the festival to expand the entertainment area, make use of the Expo Plaza and provide a more unified space for attendees.

In past years the festival took place over the river on Fourth Street with the main entertainment in the parking lot of the Courier building and the fireworks being shot from the 6th Street Bridge.

According to the Waterloo Jaycees, about 18,000 attend the Waterloo fireworks, but only a fraction of attendees were able to take part in the additional entertainment, food vendors and family activities.

With the new location, the fireworks will have to be larger to rise above the downtown buildings. The Jaycees say that means an increased investment in the fireworks themselves.
