Group highlights importance of healthcare reform law

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Wednesday marks one year after President Barack Obama signed healthcare reform into law.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act means nearly all Americans will be required to buy insurance by the year 2014.  That's to spread the risk and lower rates.

Tuesday in downtown Waterloo, people in favor of the law joined together at the small business Heal the Family, Inc.  Members of the Main Street Alliance gathered to highlight the importance of moving forward to implement the law.

"What this has done for us is given us the ability to afford the coverage at a rate that's reasonable and one that we can afford," small business owner Levorn Robinson said.

"We can't afford to let the insurance companies to go back to imposing unreasonable rate hikes without consequences and denying care to sick kids and charging our senior citizens to much and causing everyone to have the constant fear that the bottom could drop out," Iowa Citizen Action Network Political Director Amy Logsdon said.

These people are in favor of reform but many others are not.  Republican efforts in the Senate to repeal healthcare reform fell short early last month.  It failed 51 to 47 on a party line vote.

A repeal vote in the House did succeed in passing.
