Infant hearing test may not accurately measure hearing loss

Posted:

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- A new study finds some infants who initially pass their hearing test actually suffer from hearing loss.

Researchers studied nearly 400 children who received cochlear implants, an inner ear device that amplifies sound for the hard-of-hearing.

They looked at patients before and after newborn hearing tests became mandatory.

They found 25 percent of patients with hearing loss had passed the screening test, which delayed the time it took to identify their hearing problem.
