Lightning causes wastewater discharge in Edgewood

Posted:

EDGEWOOD (KWWL) – The city of Edgewood discharged an unknown amount of untreated wastewater into Honey Creek after lightening caused a malfunction at a pump station upstream of the treatment plant.

The discharge was discovered at 7:00 a.m. Monday. The city acted quickly, ending the discharge by 7:15 a.m. by running the system manually until repairs were made.

Lightning caused the float control and monitoring system on a pumping station to fail. The city will collect water samples for testing and discuss how to improve the automatic monitoring system.

City workers initially estimated 150,000 gallons of wastewater were discharged.

The DNR asks people to keep children and pets away from the 200 block of West Union for 48 hours to prevent contact with bacteria.
