Linn County approves weapons policy for county buildings

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- The Linn County Board of Supervisors Monday approved a policy that will require people carrying weapons to conceal their weapons in county buildings with the exception of four county buildings where weapons are prohibited, including the Linn County Courthouse, Linn County jail, Linn County Detention Center and the Juvenile Justice Center after it opens later this year.

Exemptions to the policy include property under the control of the Linn County Conservation Board, which may be designated as shooting ranges or hunting areas.

Linn County residents have been allowed to carry concealed weapons while conducting business at Linn County buildings that were not previously exempted from weapons. This new policy is to address the State of Iowa's new open carry law that went into effect January 1, 2011.
