Borrego pleads not guilty in Dubuque murder

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- Teodoro Borrego has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge in Dubuque.

The 52-year-old didn't appear in court at his arraignment Monday morning but sent a note to the judge instead. He remains jailed on $750,000 bail.

Borrego returned to Iowa on March 2. He was arrested in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Borrego is accused of shooting to death his longtime girlfriend, 40-year-old Shani Smith. She was found dead in their home on Feb. 24, after she didn't show up for work. Borrego and Smith have two adult children together, one of whom arrived home from serving overseas to see his father's initial court appearance last month.

According to official documents, the children told police they knew their father owned a shotgun that he used to hunting.

Borrego also asked for a speedy trial which would likely start on May 23.
