Family adopts dog from Mexico

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) Guinness and Chicho are two peas in a pod. Both dogs were adopted from shelters. Guinness in Cedar Rapids and Chicho in Cozumel, Mexico.

Danielle Stiegemeier and her husband were on a Caribbean cruise in January when they met their new dog.

"We were in Cozumel and they have a humane society there, so most of their adoptions go to the U.S. or Canada and they decided a good thing to do is bring dogs down to the cruise pier," said Danielle Stiegemeier.

Shelter operators hope to find American homes for many of the pets in Mexico.

And it worked. The Stiegemeiers couldn't resist Chicho.

"We just kind of fell in love with him and found out how we get him back here, and they coordinated everything for us," said Stiegemeier.

Stiegemeier said they wanted another dog, but they never expected to adopt from Mexico.

"No, not at all. We get a lot of comments about it. Never would have thought how easy it was either," she said.

The Humane Society of Cozumel Island arranged for an escort to fly to Iowa with Chicho. All the Stiegemeiers had to do was pick him up in Creston, where the escort lives.

"He came with all his shots, rabies, fixed, everything," said Danielle Stiegemeier.

Chicho arrived at his new home in early February.

He fit right in with the family, becoming fast friends with Guinness.

Before getting picked up by the Cozumel shelter, Chicho lived on the street.

Stiegemeier was told he was often kicked by people on the street. But now, he's one happy and energetic dog, loving his new home in Cedar Falls.
