Iowa's first redistricting plan released March 31

DES MOINES -- The first plan to redraw Iowa's congressional and legislative districts will be released March 31.

Iowa's slow population growth, as shown by the 2010 Census, is the cause of the new maps.

On the new map, prepared by the Legislative Services Agency, Iowa will now have four congressional districts instead of five. The map will also affect the state House and Senate districts.

The Legislature and Gov. Terry Branstad have the option of rejecting up to three plans from the agency. At that point, the Iowa Supreme Court will decide which plan to accept.

Public meetings will be held in Council Bluffs, Bettendorf, Cedar Rapids, Des Moines and via the Iowa Communications Network in April by the Temporary Redistricting Advisory Commission.
