Disaster in Japan prompts homeowners to check insurance coverage

Posted:

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Japan's earthquake and tsunami has prompted homeowners to double-check insurance coverage.

Basic Homeowners' Insurance protects against fire and lightning but generally doesn't cover earthquakes, floods and other natural disasters.

It's not cheap, and the costs of earthquake insurance and flood coverage were already climbing before the disaster in Japan.

Analysts say that won't help pricing.

One state insurance commissioner said earthquake insurance premiums jumped by as much as 58 percent since 2009, depending on where you live.
