Soon the City of Waterloo may own all of San Souci

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The City of Waterloo may soon own all of a nearby island in the Cedar River, where the floods of 2008 damaged several homes.

On Monday, the city council voted to purchase a 26-acre wooded area on Sans Souci Island from a couple for $53,000.

City planner Aric Schroeder says he has a signed paper from the Island's Association, saying it will sell the remaining 134 acres for $255,000.

The council will consider the agreement in the next two weeks.

A federally funded buyout program allows the purchase. The floods of 2008 damaged 20 homes on the southern area of the island. Those homes were transferred to the city and will be demolished, while these new purchases being considered would cover the wooded part of the island.
