Pepsi unveils 100% plant-based bottle

PURCHASE, NY (KWWL) -- PepsiCo Inc. says it has created a new plastic bottle made entirely of plant material.

The bottle is made from switch grass, pine bark, corn husks and other materials.  Pepsi also plans to someday use orange peels, potato scraps and other leftovers from its food business.

PepsiCo says it used methods to create a molecular structure that is identical to petroleum-based PET (polyethylene terephthalate), which results in a bottle that looks, feels and protects the beverage the same as its current traditional plastic bottles.  The new bottles will come into pilot production in 2012.

Coca-Cola Co. currently makes a bottle composed of 30 percent plant-based materials. It recently estimated it would be several years before it has a 100 percent plant-based bottle that's commercially viable.
