Train derails in rural Tama County

TAMA COUNTY (KWWL) -- A Union Pacific train came off the tracks in rural Tama County early Sunday morning.

The derailment happened near A Avenue, just east of the community of Le Grand.

Several cars left the track and flipped over, spilling their contents on the ground. Fire crews were called to the scene, but after it was discovered there was nothing toxic in the over turned cars they left.

They were filled with yogurt and cheese, along with some mail cars.

Those who live near the tracks say they didn't even hear the train when it derailed. In fact, many slept through the entire incident.

Officials with Union Pacific are on the scene and clean up crews are working to clear the tracks.

Neighbors say no one was injured in derailment.
