Thousands flee area after explosion at power plant

FUKUSHIMA, Japan (KWWL) -- Thousands of people have fled the area of a Japanese nuclear plant, 150 miles north of Tokyo.

Operator Tokyo Electric Power Company said the cooling system of a second reactor failed at the Fukushima Daiichi plant following a leak.

TEPCO said it was expecting to release some steam to relieve pressure in the plant's number three reactor.

The move comes after an explosion and leak in the facility's number one reactor.

The government says radiation levels were low and that the explosion had not impacted the reactor core container.

However, Japan's nuclear safety agency said the number of people exposed to radiation could reach 160.

An estimated 140,000 people had been evacuated from the plant's surrounding areas.
