9 UI Students in Japan accounted for

IOWA CITY (KWWL)-  Nine University of Iowa students, all spending their spring semester abroad in Japan, were shaken hundreds of miles away from the earthquake's epicenter.

"It was just the experience of the earthquake itself and the aftermath of just realizing how serious it was further north," said Janis Perkins, Associate Dean for the Office of Study Abroad.

Officials with the University of Iowa Study Abroad program spent Friday morning confirming each student's well-being.  Two were studying in the Tokyo area, and the other seven in Nagoya, all significantly south of the hardest hit parts.

"They weren't in situations where their safety was threatened," Perkins said.
