Tiffin woman charged with child endangerment

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- A Tiffin mom is charged with child endangerment after sheriff's deputies say her two-year old got a hold of a bottle of cough syrup.

Deputies say on March 1, 25-year-old Valarie Kay Harney was home alone with her 2-year-old son and had gone to sleep.  Her son then got into a bottle of liquid cough medicine.  They don't say if the child drank the medicine, but say the boy's hands were sticky from the cough medicine. Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek says the boy was treated and is doing fine.

They say the mother smelled strongly of alcohol, had slurred speech and bloodshot and watery eyes.  The criminal complaint says she had a .307 blood alcohol level according to a preliminary breath test.

Pulkrabek says Harney was arrested Wednesday night in Coralville and charged with Operating While Intoxicated.  He says a warrant had been issued for her in the cough medicine incident.
