Floyd Co. purchases failing dam on Shell Rock River

ROCKFORD (KWWL) -- A failing dam along the Shell Rock River will likely be torn down soon.  Back in August, water began swirling on top of the Rockford Dam.   Even if the dam collapses, officials say downstream flooding would be minimal at best.  But there the county still has a liability concern with the safety of the dam structure.

So this week, the Floyd County board of supervisors agreed to purchase the half of the dam that was owned by a county resident.  The county will pay $1500 for the structure and plans to obtain a permit from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to demolish it.

The long-range plan is to install a series of ripples along the Shell Rock River to promote fishing in the area, and is in talks with the city of Rockford to add some features alongside the nearby county conservation area for recreational activities.
