Former TB sanatorium to be demolished Friday

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- Oakdale Hall at the University of Iowa's research park is set to be demolished Friday.

The state of Iowa built the facility in 1908 as a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients on what is now the UI's Research Park. UI took over the property in 1965 and has housed a variety of programs in Oakdale Hall since then, including alcoholic rehabilitation and research labs and the State Hygienic Laboratory.

According to the university, the cost of maintaining, heating and cooling the facility outweighs the benefits of its continued use. By tearing it down and relocating all occupants, UI will save millions in energy and maintenance expenses for this facility.

Total demolition of the building will be completed in 2-3 weeks.
