Wahlert falls short against 2-time 3A Champs, 63-59.

DES MOINES (KWWL)--Two-time defending 3A state champion Sioux City Bishop-Heelan met Dubuque Wahlert in the first round of the boys state tournament Tuesday night.

Wahlert won the state 3A title in 2008.  Heelan's Alex Malloy got it inside for the dunk. He finished the night with finishes with 20 points as Heelan took an early one point lead.

But Wahlert would counter.  Riley McCarron hit a big three to give the Eagles their biggest lead at seven.

But Heelan came back before the break. Wesley Staten pulled up and hits a jumper as the Knights took a six point lead at halftime.

In the second half, Wahlert made a run; a steal led to an inside bucket for Jake May. May scored 14 and the Eagles got within 5, making the score 38-33.

Then, with under two minutes to go Ryan Ernst hit a long ball to pull Wahlert to within one at 60-59.

But Wesley Staten would hit five free throws in the final minute. Staten scores a game high 23 points for Heelan as Wahlert's upset bid falls short, 63-59.
