Potential presidential candidates take the stage

WAUKEE (KWWL) -- Five Republicans exploring 2012 presidential bids have taken the stage for a forum in Iowa, hoping to set themselves apart in a scattered field.

The event at a suburban Des Moines church was hosted by The Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition. The participants were former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, businessman Herman Cain, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and former Louisiana Gov. Buddy Roemer.

They made their case to hundreds of activists starting to look at potential contenders for the 2012 election cycle. All five were making the argument they can best be trusted to follow the conservative path.

Earlier Monday, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who sought the GOP nomination in 2008, spoke at three events scattered throughout Iowa, including Iowa City. Those events were sponsored by The Family Leader.

A top aide to billionaire Donald Trump was also in Iowa on Monday to meet with Republican leaders.
