WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Variety is helping students learn how to play musical instruments at the Boys and Girls Club of Black Hawk County in Waterloo. Kids are learning the basics of playing the trumpet at the boys and girls club. They're getting an opportunity to learn with new instruments thanks to Variety's grant to the Boys and Girls Club of Black Hawk County.

"They're used to getting the hand-me-downs, the used items, and so when they get something new, it's something that excites them and helps build their self-esteem, knowing it's special they get something new," said executive director Chuck Rowe.

Each day after school, kids can learn the basics of trumpet, guitar and violin among other musical instruments as part of the club's Music Makers Conservatory program.

"It really builds their self-esteem. It makes them excited to do things when they're holding that instrument. They have smiles and they're really excited to participate," said Rowe.

For Waterloo 3rd grader Pameliayeah Singleton, it's fun.

"I've learned how to hold it properly and I've learned all the notes. Most of them," said Singleton.

"The purpose of this Music Makers Conservatory isn't just so kids can learn how to make music with a musical instrument, it's to teach perseverance, goal setting, making sure you're focused on things. Music helps improve math and science skill. All those things are just using music as a tool and we couldn't do that without Variety's supporting us," said Rowe.
