Independence school shows support for classmate Gage West

INDEPENDENCE (KWWL) -- A seventh-grader waiting on a double transplant is getting some much needed support.  Gage West, who attends Independence Jr. Sr. High School, has Type 1 Primary Hyperoxaluria.

He's currently going through dialysis and needs a liver and a kidney.

Monday, classmates presented West with a total of $3,321.40 to help cover medical expenses.  That money was raised through donations by students, staff and area businesses, plus a recent dance.

Doctors are hoping to get West a transplant by Easter, but it might be longer than that.  He is at the top of the list because of his age.

Going to Iowa City each day for dialysis, his sister is nice enough to bring him his homework every day.  School officials say he always keeps up with his school work.
