UPDATE: Fire damages Coralville businesses

CORALVILLE (KWWL) -- A fire blamed on natural gas damaged seven business in Coralville.

Crews were called to 2421 James Avenue around 11:30 a.m. Monday morning.

Officials say someone was working on a gas tank at #1 Cab when a spark ignited natural gas.  The fire quickly spread to Auto Toyz, heavily damaging that business.

Smoke damaged five other businesses in the building.

Assistant Coralville fire chief Bill Horning says, "I haven't looked inside but I can imagine, there's not a lot left. With all of the cars in there burning up rubber tires, and upholstery inside they burn very hot."

Other businesses in the area include #1 Auto Repair, Coralville Frame and Axle Services, Clover Painting, Lifeson, Kang's Martial Arts, R Z Products and Rick Klemesrud Flooring.

Officials confirm there was an explosion, but say it could have been a propane tank or gas tank.

James Macintosh dropped his car off at Auto Toyz this Morning for a set of new speakers but will have to find a new mode of transportation.

"My car was here on Friday also, but one component to the stereo wasn't in, so I had to bring it back today."

Unfortunately James's new Honda Accord didn't survive the fire.

"Nothing like this has ever happened to me."

Four departments including Coralville and Iowa City responded to the fire.

No one was injured in the fire.
