Eastern Iowa kids, teams take home state archery honors

Posted:

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Some Eastern Iowa kids took home honors last weekend in the Iowa championships of the National Archery in Schools Program in Des Moines.

After a two month season, 624 archers in elementary, middle and high school took to the range to show off the skills they've learned.

"For every team that gets here, it's mandatory for the archery program to be offered as part of the in-school curriculum," shooting sports coordinator for the Department of Natural Resources Ben Berka said in a written statement. "We offer standardized training. Folks come in for a day. They learn a lot about archery and how to teach archery to beginners."

Berka adds that with fewer young people hunting, the sport provides an entry to the outdoors and an opportunity for kids that may not be the best athletes.
