State monopoly on Iowa liquor stores ended in 1987

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Iowa's state retail liquor stores started closing March 1, 1987 as 256 licensed private liquor outlets were established.

It was a four-month transition period from state-run to private-run liquor stores.

Legislation passed July 1st the two years prior to this change ended the state-monopoly of alcohol sales.
