Smoking during early pregnancy increases risk of heart defects

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Smoking early in pregnancy significantly increases the risk the baby will be born with heart defects according to a new study from the CDC.

Researchers studied more than 2,000 babies born with congenital heart defects, and compared them to 3,400 infants without the problem.

They found women who smoked during the first trimester of pregnancy increased the chance their baby would have a congenital heart defect by 20 to 70 percent.
