Waterloo council denies another liquor license

WATERLOO (KWWL)-- Another business has been denied a liquor license by the Waterloo City Council.  El Mexquite Restaurant in the 900 block of Broadway just opened about six months ago without a liquor license. After applying for a variance to sell beer and wine, the city's board of adjustment gave the green light for the restaurant's license to be considered by the city council.  But the restaurant sits in a residential area, and many of those living there didn't want another business in the neighborhood selling alcohol.

"We enjoy living where we stay at.  And every time we turn around, there's another liquor store, there's another place that's selling alcohol.  You know honestly, we're tired of it," one resident who spoke before the council said.

Neighbors presented a petition with some 150 signatures opposing the restaurant's liquor license.  All but one council member voted to deny the license.  No word yet on whether El Mexquite plans to appeal the decision with the state.
