$20,576 for emergency shelters in Linn County

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Eight eastern Iowa homeless shelters are getting some much needed help. A November event called 'Sleep Out for Homelessness' raised $20,576.  That's a record amount of money from the event, now in its 5th year.

More than 100 people helped raise the money by braving the cold to sleep in cardboard boxes.  They camped out in November in Greene Square Park.

The check presentation was Monday at Waypoint Services.  The checks will be distributed evenly to the following emergency shelters:

Catholic Worker House
Cedar House Shelter
Foundation 2 Youth Shelter
Mission of Hope
The Salvation Army Emergency Lodging
Waypoint Domestic Violence Program
Waypoint Madge Philips Center
Willis Dady Emergency Shelter

Cargill was also recognized at the event for being an outstanding corporate donor.

"Its a tool that we use in our community to try to address and resolve the issues of homelessness in Cedar Rapids and Linn County. At any given night there's approximately four hundred homeless people in LInn County," event organizer Donald Tyne said.  Tyne is with Linn County Veteran Affairs.
