Talk Shop Cafe in Waterloo Closes Doors

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Another business has closed on the East side of Waterloo.

Talk Shop Cafe, located next to East 4th Street Liquor shut its doors this week. Boards members say higher rent has forced them to close.

It seemed as though Talk Shop Cafe really put itself on the map as a positive place in the Waterloo community.

"Its really hard to drive by and its not there anymore," said LaTanya Graves, board member.

Graves has been on the Talk Shop Cafe board since 2008. She says despite some of the negativity in the area, the cafe was made to be a positive, uplifting place.

"So many times we hear all the negative things that take place, but this was a positive place for youth. We had baby showers, a wedding reception, and teen dances," said Graves.

The cafe was even a host for presidential stops and campaign headquarters. In June, the cafe even helped people grieve after two men were shot and killed at the liquor store next door.

"David made sure that even though there may have been things going on at the liquor store, he made sure that the Talk Shop was still positive," said Graves.

But the doors of The Talk Shop Cafe will be forever closed at the East 4th Street location. Graves says increase in rent is to blame for that.

"Even though we were generating income. The rent was just a major portion of what has closed this place."

When David Goodson opened The Talk Shop Cafe in 2008 rent was 500 dollars. It later jumped to 1,100 and just recently, the building's owner asked for 1,700.

Roosevelt Roby is the owner of the building where talk shop cafe is located. KWWL called him to ask about the increase in rent and he has not returned our call.

We are told the board is looking at other locations to open The Talk Shop Cafe, but have not decided to reopen yet.
