Corps urges Iowans to stay off ice at 3 lakes

Posted:

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- Iowans should use caution on ice-covered waterways as fluctuating temperatures are causing areas of thin ice to pop up everywhere.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says the ice at Coralville Lake, Saylorville Lake and Lake Red Rock should be considered extremely dangerous and unsafe for winter activities. People are urged to stay off the ice for the rest of the winter.

The corps says unstable temperatures can cause ice to rot. Rotten ice may look solid, but it can give way easily.
