University of Iowa taking action against professor

IOWA CITY (KWWL) --  The University of Iowa says it is taking action against one of its top doctors who has been on paid administrative leave.

The university closed its investigation of Dr. Gary Hunninghake in December without filing charge. Hunninghake then filed a lawsuit seeking an injunction against the university prohibiting them from releasing records related to the investigation to the Associated Press and the Iowa City Press-Citizen.

The University has said it will not block the lawsuit. But on Friday announced it is taking action against Dr. Hunninghake under University policy.

The University said in a press release they are "not legally at liberty to discuss the details of this matter," due to the injunction.

Dr. Hunninghake has been on paid leave from his job as a professor and the former director of UI's Institute for Clinical and Translational Research since April.

In May, Dr. Hunninghake was arrested for making a false report to Chicago police after claiming a self-inflicted stabbing had been an assault.

He recently pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct charges stemming from that incident.
