Healthy lifestyle vs. prescription drugs for depression and anxiety

IRVINE, CALIFORNIA (KWWL) -- New research from the University of California Irvine finds healthy lifestyle changes can be just as effective as taking prescription drugs to treat certain mental illnesses, like depression and anxiety.

Researchers studied the effects of therapeutic lifestyle changes, like adopting a healthy diet, regular exercise, or volunteering.  They found making positive lifestyle changes were effective treatments for conditions like depression and anxiety, and did not have the side effects, or expense, linked to prescription drugs.

However, experts say to keep the benefit patients need to make an effort to sustain their lifestyle change, which isn't always easy.
