Restaurant owners warned against phoney inspectors

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- State officials are again warning restaurants about phony health inspectors.

The Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals has received several complaints from restaurant owners. Officials say fake inspectors often bully the restaurant staff to get social security numbers and cash to "make violations disappear."

The scam surfaced in Iowa last year.

Food establishment operators who are contacted by a health inspector asking for personal information prior to conducting a complaint investigation should contact their local law enforcement about a possible scam. Anyone with questions about a state food inspector's identity should call the Food and Consumer Safety Bureau at (515) 281-6538.
