Cedar Rapids man makes contact with family in New Zealand

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL)- Jeff Moores has been living the horror of the aftermath of the Christchurch, New Zealand earthquake from his own living room in Cedar Rapids.

Moores went nearly two days without any word from his family living in Christchurch after the 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck.

"It was just left up to the imagination, and I've got a very vivid imagination," Moores said.

After numerous phone calls and hours of trying to get through to his family on Facebook, Moores fears were finally alleviated when he got in touch with his brother Wednesday morning, who told him everyone was okay.

"To know that they were okay was a relief to say the least," Moores said.

Moores said his brother painted a picture of the destruction--dozens dead, hundreds missing, and a sense of chaos in the streets, as aftershocks have prevented the city from recovering.

Moores has had to take the good news in stride.  He says he hasn't heard from his daughter living in Australia for three weeks.

The city she lives in is battling a natural disaster of a different kind, severe flooding.

"Two different countries, two members of the same family, it's pretty hard," Moores said.
