"Cedar Rapids" the movie debuts in Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Eastern Iowa's largest city is in the spotlight this weekend with the movie "Cedar Rapids" now in more theaters across the country. It's a film about an insurance agent visiting the city for an annual conference.

Most of the movie wasn't actually filmed here because of Iowa's film tax scandal. But as any Cedar Rapids native will tell you, hear a movie named after the city you grew up in and you're definitely curious.

"People definitely want to see a movie about their hometown," Associate Manager at Wehrenberg Theaters Makenzie McMullen said.

That's especially if your hometown is Cedar Rapids. Friday afternoon the movie "Cedar Rapids" opened in Cedar Rapids theaters.

"We have 5 to 6 showings everyday. Our last showing is around 10:30," McMullen said.

And just two showings in and the reviews were flying.

"I enjoyed it, there was definitely a lot of adult humor in it," Jim White of Stanwood said.

"It's just a funny, kinda light hearted movie which is perfect. I think a lot of people are looking for that right now," Brenda Carmondy of Ely said.

And right now, more than ever, putting Cedar Rapids in the national spotlight is a good thing.

"I like that it's a good town. I think we need a little positive here," Cedar Rapids native Lori Jantzen said.

The movie, starring Ed Helms, as an insurance agent visiting Cedar Rapids, des touch on the floods of 2008. That's also something movie goers appreciate. Although the movie was actually filmed in Ann Arbor, Michigan, managers here expect to see a lot of Cedar Rapidians stopping by to see "Cedar Rapids" on the big screen.
