Three teens charged in Iowa City vandalism

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- Three teens have been charged in connection with a vandalism spree that started on Halloween of 2010.

Jacob Michael Schmitz, 17; Aaron Schmitz, 15; and Alex Kumor, 17; all of Iowa City, have been charged with 1st Degree Criminal Mischief.

Police say that since Oct. 31, 2010, the Iowa City Police Department received numerous complaints of criminal mischief happening on the weekends.

The incidents began as smashed pumpkins and then escalated to damage to lamp posts and garages, and eventually damage to vehicles.

On Feb. 5, a witness got a license plate number of a vehicle leaving a Westside neighborhood where vehicles had been damaged.

After police located the vehicle, an investigation led police to the three teens.  They confessed to being responsible for a majority of the damage.

While there have been numerous reports of vehicle damage on the Westside, police believe these three are only responsible for the Feb. 5 incidents.

The teens told police a baseball bat was used to cause the damage.

Total property damage is estimated to be in excess of $10,000.

The teens have been referred to Juvenile Court.
