Northrup, Herkelman and Black all lose in consolation round

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- The three high school wrestlers that have been the center of national attention have all lost in the consolation round of the state tournament.

On Wednesday, Joel Northrup of Linn Mar defaulted his first round match to Cassy Herkelman of Cedar Falls.

Herkelman and Megan Black, of Ottumwa, were the first girls to wrestle in the state tournament in its 87-year history.

Herkelman went on to the quarterfinals where she lost to Matt Victor of Indianola, 5-1.

In consolation round two, Herkelman was pinned by Des Moines North's Jordan Jones in 1:21.

Northrup won his first consolation round match by winning a 9-0 major decision over Glenwood's Same Jameson.  In his next consolation round match, Northrup lost to Pleasant Valley's Tyler Willers 3-2 in overtime.

Black was pinned in her first match by Bettendorf's Logan Ryan in 52 seconds.  In the consolation round, she was pinned by Mason City's Andres Gonzalez in 3:15.

The tournament continues through Saturday in Des Moines.
