Costs prevent Americans from taking needed meds

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- According to a new report by the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics, one out of four adults over 45 take statins, which lower cholesterol, but the cost is preventing many from taking it.

Half of men and one-third of women aged 65 to 74 have taken a statin.

The study cites an increasing number of Americans who are delaying medical and dental care because of cost, with many even skipping needed prescription medications.

And while most deaths still occur in hospitals and nursing homes, the number of people who died in their homes in 2007 increased to almost 25 percent.
