Day 2 action from 3A & 1A at State Wrestling


DES MOINES (KWWL)-- Defending team champions W-SR shot out of the gate on Thursday. Starting at 103 Andrew Steiert picked up a 2nd period fall, while teammate Eric DeVos followed suit at 112. The Go-Hawks won matches at six of the first seven weights including another pin by first time state participant at 130.

Seth Ebling said, "It was only a first round win, but it's something special. You really can't compare it to any other kind of win."

Jordan Rinken picked up another pin at 140 while defending champion Cody Krumwide capped the day with a quick fall over Logan Sherman of Pleasant valley at heavyweight. In all, nine Go-Hawks moved on in the championship bracket.

Keeping good pace was toped ranked Iowa City West.  At 125 Jake Hathaway picks up a takedown on Sioux City's Tyler McMullen en route to a third period fall, While teammate Justin Koethe got a major decision over East High's Jeremy Helgesen as the Iowa CIty West Trojans advance 8 wrestlers.

At 145 GRNT's Tyler Lashbrook appears poised to improve last years 8th place finish and looks well on his way picking up a 7-4 decision over Mason City Parker Sturges

Tyler Lashbrook said, "I felt great the whole match, wasn't really tired. It felt good on top, and I felt confident on my feet. Those were really important things for me coming in here."

I his first state meet appearance Cedar Falls senior K.C. Grooms was dominate at 160 rolling to an 18-3 tech fall over Ryan Maxwell of Keokuk

K.C. Groomes said, "It's amazing. It's like the whole world's around you when you're down on the floor. It's a crazy feeling. I never imagined you it would feel. It's great."

Moving on to class 1A and the quarterfinals. Don Bosco would look to defend its title with 5 wrestlers remaining, but at 119, Tyler Shulista of Alburnett would get the pin over Dylan Rhoads. The Dons lost their first 3 matches, but Brandon Welter comes out in dominating fashion and gets the tech fall. He's the only Don to advance in the championship bracket.

At 125 Jesup's Ryan Hall gets the 7-6 decision over Sumner-Fredricksburg's Devin Rausch, and at 140 Braden Vezak of Turkey Valley gets the takedown, and he is moving on.

Nashua-Plainfield trying to keep pace as Christian Miller gets the pin, and Jesup's Austin Even follows suit with a pin of his own over Lisbon's Kal Alger.

At 171, A-P's Jake Everts is moving on with a 7 to 5 decision over Jayden DeVilbiss, and an emotional match for AGWSR's Evan Johnson as he gets the takedown and goes on to beat Cade Jones of West Branch.

And at heavyweight, Tanner Johnson of Dike-New Hartford gets the takedown winning 5-0 and he is moving on to the semifinals.
