Theater program brings together Cedar Rapids middle school students

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL)-- A partnership in Cedar Rapids gives at-risk middle school students a chance to experience a real theater production.

The Eastern Iowa Arts Academy is a safe environment for "tweens" to find their artistic creativity.  Matthew 25, a non-profit organization donates the space and volunteers from the EIAA provide the resources for students like Maddie Hurford a chance to shine in the spotlight. Students say they've found a place to fit in on and off stage.

"Come! Why not? We have smoothies and stuff, so that's always fun! And you can come and see a performance of people younger than you and just enjoy it," Huford said.

"We are finding that the demand for this program as arts after school is huge. Kids are finding their place," said Julia Kottal of the EIAA.

The EIAA began as a few classes at McKinley middle school in Cedar Rapids. Today, this traveling arts school has nearly 30 locations in the corridor.

The Groundswell community space opened on K avenue in October.
