Alcohol may cause sleepiness, but disrupts sleep

Posted:

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Drinking a nightcap before bed may make you sleepier, but a new study shows alcohol actually disrupts sleep.

Researchers at the University of Michigan compared the sleep patterns of men and women who consumed a mixed drink before bed, to those who only drank a caffeine-free soda.

While both men and women who drank alcohol had disturbed sleep, women woke more frequently and were awake for more minutes during the night.

Women who drank enough to be intoxicated got about 20 minutes less sleep than those who drank soda only.
