Female makes wrestling history, Herkelman wins by default

DES MOINES (KWWL)-- A first in Iowa high school wrestling history, a woman has won her first match at the state tournament by default.

Cedar Falls freshman Cassy Herkelman was slated to take on sophomore Joel Northrup, of Linn-Mar, in a first round match up Thursday.  Northrup defaulted the match saying it was a matter of personal belief.

Joel Northrup's statement to media:

"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Cassy and Meagan and their accomplishments.  However, wrestling is a combat sport and it can get violent at times.  As a matter of conscience and my faith I do not believe that it is appropriate for a boy to engage a girl in this manner.  It is unfortunate that I have been placed in a situation not seen in most other High School sports in Iowa."

Herkelman and Ottumwa sophomore Megan Black, both 112 pounds, made state history last week as the first girls ever to qualify for the state tournament.

Northrup, who was one of the favorites to win his weight class, will be eligible to compete in the consolation rounds.  By rule, if Northrup had forfeited the match, he would not have been eligible to compete in the consolation round.
