Cedar Rapids fire chief retires

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Cedar Rapids Fire Chief Stephen Reid is retiring, effective at the end of the day Wednesday.

In a memorandum sent to all fire department employees on Wednesday, Reid did not provide any details about why he is retiring. He has held the position for less than a year.

According to Cassie Willis with the City of Cedar Rapids, Assistant Fire Chief Mark English will serve as the interim Fire Chief. English served as interim chief before Reid was hired and was one of the candidates for Fire Chief.

Below is the memorandum written by Reid:

I would like to inform you that I am retiring from my position as Fire Chief with the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, effective at the close of business on Wednesday, February 16, 2011.

Thank you for the opportunities for professional and personal development that you have provided me. I have enjoyed working for the Cedar Rapids Fire Department and appreciate the support that you provided me during my tenure.

While I look forward to enjoying my retirement, I will miss working with the many outstanding men and women of the Cedar Rapids Fire Department team who work extremely hard each and every day while protecting the citizens of the City of Cedar Rapids.

I wish you much success in the future, stay safe, and Godspeed.
