The condition of the Iowa National Guard is healthy

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- In the annual Condition of the Guard address, the Adjutant General of the Iowa National Guard, Maj. Gen. Timothy Orr, said the organization is healthy.

Orr said the Iowa National Guard is a national leader in recruiting and retaining members, even though deployments have been at the highest level since World War II.

Maj. Gen. Orr told a joint session of the Legislature on Wednesday that 65% of the men and women in the Guard are combat veterans. More than 16,000 members have served abroad, largely in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Orr says despite that heavy schedule of deployments, the Guard began this year with more than 100% of its authorized strength, a level the Guard has maintained since 2003.
