Record number of grain bin accidents

W. LAFAYETTE, IN (KWWL) -- 2010 saw a record number of grain bin accidents across the nation as farmers climbed into the bins to free up corn that had become moldy and stuck to the sides of the bins.

A Purdue University report shows 51 grain bin accidents last year, up from 38 in 2009.  The accidents are prompting federal safety regulators to send letters this week to 10,000 operators in the U.S. telling them they are responsible for protecting their workers.

OSHA officials say they will consider prosecuting grain bin operators whose workers die or are injured in accidents.
