Air Force pilot returns to Iowa to upgrade plane

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) --  A pilot with the German Air Force was at the Eastern Iowa Airport Tuesday, working to upgrade an aircraft he flew to Iowa back in 1994.

Lieutenant Commander Ingo Wilde went up in a C-160 plane for a test flight on Tuesday. He's been working with Rockwell Collins to make upgrades to the plane's navigation systems.

It's the next step up from the system the plane was installed with back in 1994.

"It's enabling us to operate the aircraft in a civilian environment, on terminal areas, requirements we have to meet," said Lt. Cmdr. Wilde.

Wilde's flight back to Germany in the C-160 is also his farewell flight.

He'll be retiring from the Air Force in about two weeks.
