City council votes to ban firearms

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- The Iowa City City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to ban firearms from being carried in city buildings and busses.

The controversial ruling is similar to ones being passed in cities across the nation.

City council members agreed that city property is a place for civil public discourse, and no place for weapons.

That sentiment was not shared by everyone at Tuesday's meeting, however.

Many say the decision infringes on their right to bear arms.
