People urged to watch for thin ice

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Area emergency responders are warning folks to watch for thin ice on area waterways as the warm temperatures melt it away.

Greg Buelow with the Cedar Rapids Fire Department says people should be especially careful near bridges, thoroughfares, culverts and wherever else there may be currents flowing underneath, as ice in these areas may be very thin or non-existent.

Dark snow, dark ice, clear ice and honeycombed ice are signs of weak spots according to Buelow.

Parents are urged to warn children of the dangers of unsafe ice and make sure they stay off of it.

While Cedar Rapids says they haven't had any incidents or injuries this month due to thin ice, they are proactively cautioning people about thin ice to prevent any tragedies.
