Cedar Rapids firefighter firing upheld


CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- A commission has upheld the firing of a Cedar Rapids firefighter who admitted to stealing $76 from a cash kitty kept in a station locker.

Police say Christopher Slaughter was caught on surveillance tape for the theft on Dec. 22. Tuesday, he told the Cedar Rapids Civil Service Commission that he was fighting depression and a gambling addiction at that time.

Slaughter has pleaded not guilty to criminal charges of burglary and theft. He trial is set for May.
