Lack of sleep may raise risk of colon cancer

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- A new study suggests too little sleep may raise the risk of colon cancer.

Research from University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Ohio found people who averaged fewer than six hours of sleep a night had an nearly 50 percent increased risk of colorectal adenomas compared to those who got at least seven hours of shut-eye.

Adenomas are a precursor to cancerous tumors if not treated.

Researchers say the risk is comparable to having a parent or sibling with colon cancer.
