Obesity links to heart disease regardless of other problems

KWWL (WATERLOO) -- A new study links obesity to fatal heart disease, regardless of other related risk factors.

It has long been assumed that obesity-related diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure increase the risk of heart disease.

But the study of 6,000 middle aged men found when these conditions were factored out, obese men were still 60 percent more likely to die of a heart attack or stroke.

Researchers believe obesity contributes to inflammation in the body, which is a key factor in fatal cardiovascular disease.
